Jordan Dargue writes about different exercises to stimulate your dog and how these exercises can benefit your dog’s health!

A healthy dog has a healthy body and a healthy mind. In addition to giving your dog a quality diet, it also helps to give your dog the right exercise, and different ways to stimulate your dog’s mind.

In this post, we will outline some DIY exercise tips that you may find handy to keep your dog’s mind healthy.

One of the best ways to stimulate your dog is by utilising their senses. Dogs rely mainly on their sense of smell along with their sight.

Using treats to stimulate your dog’s senses

Hide and seek using a treat is a simple game that requires dogs to find the treats hidden around the house or garden. The dog locates the treats by using their sense of smell.  You must remember that if your dog is new to this, not to hide treats too far away at first to give your dog the opportunity to learn how to seek out by smell. As the dog gets better at finding the treats close by, gradually increase the distance. When the dog gets familiar with the game, you can hide the treats in hard to reach places too, but remember to keep your dog safe at all times

Using a clicker to enhance training methods

A clicker is a positive reinforcement tool that helps dogs to realise when what they’ve done pleases their owner. The clicker gives them a signal that they are doing something good and that a reward or a treat is about to come. You can purchase a suitable dog clicker from many dog product stores, these can be located on K9 Nation app – click here…

A clicker is a small device that produces a clicking sound.  Your dog will need to get used to the clicker device in order to understand what it is.  This can be achieved by repetition, click and reward a treat routine.  It may take some time and patience before your dog gets familiar with the clicker but once they get used to it, the result can be better than praising their achievements verbally.

Hiding the treat game

This game is a simple brain stimulating exercise for your dog. It’s a fun game for all of the family to take part in and your dog will love this game because they get a treat!

To play this game, you’d need two to three plastic opaque cups and a dog treat. Turn the cups over and have your dog watch as you place a treat under one of the cups. Give your dog the signal to come over and the aim is to get your dog to select the cup that is hiding the treat. To practice, turn the cup over that contains the treat and give it to them.

Practice doing this around a few times until your dog gets the gist of the game.

Once you think your dog has enough practice, you can change the cup where you place the treat.  Have your dog select the correct cup.  If your dog gets it right, then they will be rewarded with the treat. This way, you help your dog do serious thinking, challenge their mental ability, and sharpen their visual tracking skills.

Play Fetch

When it comes to your dogs, playing fetch seems very simple and easy. Give your dog a good variety of toys so they don’t get bored of fetching the same things for you.

Drop It!

Once your dog knows how to play fetch, the next exercise you can give them is the drop it game.  This game helps discipline your dog.  To start this game, all you need to do is to let your dog fetch their toy and start with the command “drop it.”  Make sure to give your dogs a treat when they do things right.

It’s very important to keep your dog physically stimulated with walks and playtime, it’s also essential to exercise their brain. Most dogs are extremely motivated by food, so this can be done relatively easily with food-based games as part of their daily routine
