Hello! I’m Louise, the owner and founder of bearkind. Bear, my almost 2 year old cockapoo is the inspiration behind the brand and our chief product tester. A role he enjoys very much!!

I run bearkind outside of the working hours of my full time job like most small businesses. I’m really excited for the future of the business, and I hope you will join our bearkind community and follow our journey!

The Inspiration!

When my husband and I got Bear back in 2019 I searched numerous sites for pet products and brands that matched our values. I tried and failed to find a one-stop-shop where I could buy everything I wanted and needed for Bear. I was disappointed. I’d also seen an array of dog boxes across social media, of mixed quality, and not one of them offered the combination of plant-based treats, eco-friendly toys and cruelty-free products. I realised that this was a gap I needed to fill. I began searching for small businesses and brands which either aligned with our values completely or offered products that suited the requirements. Then, after engaging with a number of them I decided I was happy and confident that I could bring my dream to life.

As Bear was the inspiration it made sense to include his name in the business name and kind by definition is defined as the quality of being friendly and considerate. We want to encourage kindness, to animals, to ourselves and each other, and to our planet. I also loved that when I wrote it down it said be..kind. It took months of testing, planning and preparation but we finally launched our website in March 2020 and shipped our first boxes the following month!

What to expect!

Our monthly subscription boxes include a minimum of 5 products; 3 plant-based treats, 1 eco-friendly toy and 1 other product. Once products have featured in our monthly boxes they become available to purchase as singular items on our online store. With us featuring 5+ products each month, the range of products we sell on our online pet store is constantly growing. Selling any leftover products helps us minimise waste, and we choose to only restock products on demand. We also sell a range of compostable poo bags, puppy gift boxes and puppy products, and give people the option to gift one of our monthly boxes to other lucky pups.

Our monthly boxes are shipped on the first working day after the 10th of each month and all other product orders are shipped on our weekly parcel drop off day, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions!

Our choices!

My husband and I have been vegan for 4 years, and I was vegetarian 3 years prior to that. The vegan lifestyle invites a lot of questions and thought, and making changes to our diet and lifestyle only increased our awareness and consciousness about environmentalism and consumerism. We try to make the best choices that we can make for ourselves and the planet, every day. We are much more conscious about the products we buy, how we can support and help sustainable business and how we recycle or repurpose what we have. I once read that “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly”. This is so very true! The important thing for us is that we try and we appreciate it’s not always possible to be perfect, so we’re never too hard on ourselves if we don’t get it right.

Packaging was something I really wanted to get right. I opted for cardboard boxes made from 80% recycled materials. They’re 100% compostable and recyclable. Our packaging shred is 100% recycled and is also recyclable, biodegradable and reusable.

We use brown paper tape, an eco-friendly label company to produce our biodegradable and compostable stickers and a sustainable and vegan printing company to make our flyers. Knowing that our customers repurpose our packaging makes us happy! Some of the best pictures and videos we’ve been sent are of boxes and shred being reused for enrichment games!

The brands we work with are either 100% plastic-free or are actively working towards it. And if they are still using plastic packaging, we ensure that it can be widely recycled. We’re making it our mission to support the brands in moving away from harmful plastic packaging and instead opting for plant-based alternative packaging, which is kinder to the planet and our wildlife!

When we’re sourcing products we ask a lot of questions, and many of them are centred around sustainability. Questions such as ‘Is the product made from responsible or natural materials, and are any of them hazardous to dogs?’ ‘How durable is the product?’, ‘How is it made?’, ‘Can it be reused, repurposed or composted?’. These questions help us determine and understand the suitability and ensure we are sourcing the best possible products not just for our brand and our customers, but for the planet too.

With the poo bags we were keen to offer some variety and only stock compostable bags. So we chose to stock 3 brands, and we may stock a couple more in the future. There’s a big difference between biodegradable and compostable and we believe a lot of people are misled to believe biodegradable poo bags are good for the planet. Little do some realise the harm they can do. If you’re not aware of the differences we encourage you to research them and make the change. It’s one of the easiest, sustainable switches you can make!

Our choices!

We also try and add value by sharing tips for sustainable pet parenting on our social platforms too. We did a series a while back which we named bearthkind (we basically stuck a ‘th’ in bearkind so it included the word earth). The series detailed 10 top tips on how to help reduce your dog’s carbon pawprint. Tips included things such as walking closer to home, trying plant-based treats, donating products to local rescue shelters and mending and saving toys destined for the bin. All 10 tips are on our Instagram grid and in a story highlight if you’d like to check them out! We’re hoping to do another short series soon!

Supporting small businesses!

We love that we’re in the fortunate position to be able to support other small businesses, and whilst we’re featuring some of the more well known and recognised brands in our first 12 months we will push to support and purchase from more smaller, independent businesses as we grow. As we continue to create new monthly subscription boxes and find new products, we will also continue to strive to work with companies that approach sustainability both ecologically and socially.

Giving back!

10p from every box & sale is used to purchase collars for dogs in rescue centres across the UK. It’s a really small donation right now but we hope to do more as the business grows. We do have some other ideas which we hope can come to fruition at some point!

Events!

We did our first event in September this year; The North East Dog Festival, and Bear and I enjoyed meeting everyone so much that we’re keen to do as many UK events and markets as we can next year! If you would like to recommend an event please contact me at louise@bearkind.co.uk

Follow our journey!

As I said at the start I’m really excited for the future of the business, we have lots of wonderful products and collaborations in the pipeline and I hope you will join our Bearkind community and follow our journey!
