Claire Lawrence, also known as ‘The Dog Charmer’ shares her origin story and why she is so passionate about the work she does.

Hi, my name’s Claire and my primary mission within my work is to help pet dog owners to better manage their barking dogs.

I first experienced the perils of a barking dog back when I was 19 years old. I tell the story in my book of how my first German Shepherd Dog, Titon encountered an off lead dog incident where three dogs attacked him.

Although he defended himself incredibly well against the other dogs and they came off a lot worse than he did externally. Internally, he was very broken.

Soon after the fight, my perfectly behaved 60kg boy, who I could trust and walk anywhere with either on or off the lead, became my biggest problem.

I couldn’t walk him like I used too. As soon as we came across anything in the form of a distraction he started barking, snarling, snapping and he looked like something out of the exorcist prepared to murder the approaching intruder.

I had zero idea how to stop it.

In not knowing anything about it, I made some pretty terrible mistakes along the way, too.

I punished him before I found out how scared he was. I followed people’s advice that weren’t qualified to give it. I quickly realised you don’t ask your mechanic to fix your dental work, just as you wouldn’t ask the pet shop manager about performing your open-heart surgery.

You go and ask a specialist.

This is where I started to find out hugely complicated a topic barking was, and because of all of the variables on it, it was no wonder I’d inadvertently created a bigger problem for myself than I’d originally started out with. I noticed other people doing that also!

With misinformation all over the place too, it’s hard to know where to begin.

This is why I wanted to support people to better manage their barking problem and avoid making things worse or some of the same mistakes I’d made that left me with years of work to rectify it.

When you make some easy amendments to the dog’s lifestyle, in a lot of cases you can resolve the barking issue altogether. At the very least, you’ll prevent the problem from getting worse and be able to manage the dog more.

In some instances, dogs will require more in-depth behavioural support, but I find for the most part that by using my simple 3 Steps to Silence protocol, we can very quickly get a handle on things.

I write about this protocol in my second book ‘3 Steps To Silence’ and it consists of first preventing the barking from being practised, introducing ultimate engagement and mental stimulation activities to tire their mind, and putting in a period of settling on each and every walk to teach the dog that outside doesn’t always have to be a huge worry/overexciting.

As much as I focus on helping the dogs behaviour, I also work on the owners. Often I find that through repeated experiences of their dog lunging, being labelled as aggressive, perhaps even breaking loose and grabbing hold of another dog all of this soon swipes away at their confidence too.

So, we work on building that too!

If you’d like to find out more about what I do or find help and support for your barking dog, then I have a lot of free resources that you can access across various platforms so I’d recommend starting there.

If you’re more serious about working with me more directly, then you can take a look at my online learning library, Evolution. All available at: www.3sts.co.uk

“I’ve been working with Claire for 8 months now to get help to manage my fear reactive Labrador. She completely understands our difficulties and her help is pivotal in improving my confidence too! I would definitely recommend Claire as an empathetic and highly skilled trainer who has a natural affinity with dogs and a real desire to help owners get the best out of the relationship they have with their dog”.
