K9 Nation Interns

Meet Megan, Ellie, Nancy, Sarah, Deepa and Evy! Our K9 Nation interns, from all over the UK, who are working with us to build and grow our K9 Nation community and get an insight into what it’s like to be part of a start-up business.

Meg Bennet

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hello I’m Meg! I graduated from Aberystwyth University in May and I am now the proud owner of a degree in Film and Television Production with Creative Writing (yes this is a bit of a mouthful). I live in Stafford, Staffordshire with my parents and brothers and our furry favourite Peggie Sue.

Why did you join K9 Nation?

I joined K9 for this program as quite frankly I just love dogs. Given an opportunity to work with Becky and her team to create a virtual community for dog owners like myself is an absolute dream!

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

Where to start… I love working closely with the other interns, I feel like I’ve learnt as much from them as I have from George and Becky! I have a huge sense of admiration for what K9 are trying to achieve here and so to be a part of that is so rewarding, plus, I’d be lying if I said being able to talk about dogs all the time wasn’t a massive bonus!

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

There is a lot I hope to achieve in this internship. I would like to gain valuable experience and insight about working for start-ups, and a wider knowledge of audiovisual advertising by working on the podcast side of things!

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time I like to cook as I find this very meditative, and I also enjoy presenting weekly shows on my local radio station!

Nancy Dunsmore

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Nancy and I’m currently studying and living in Liverpool. Originally, I’m from Solihull in the West Midlands which is where my dog Reggie is currently living with my parents. I miss him a lot! He’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and he’s 11.

Why did you join K9 Nation?

I joined K9 because I loved the concept of the app and was also keen to learn from a small business. Becky and her team have created an amazing and unique concept. I can’t wait to learn more!

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

I love everybody’s passion for dogs and how we all have the same end goal, which is to grow K9 Nation so not one person is without this app!

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

To gain experience and knowledge from someone who has been there every step of the way when growing a business from scratch. I’d also love to build upon my graphic and digital skills.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time, I love being with my friends and family. Going on walks has been a saving grace in lockdown and way too much coffee has been consumed on the way! K9 Nation has been great at suggesting new walks for me and my friends to explore!!

Eleanor Richardson

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Ellie Richardson and i’m currently studying a Masters in Public Relations and Strategic Communications at Leeds Beckett University. I have lived in lots of places around the UK due to my dad working as an officer in the army but I currently live in Salisbury in Wiltshire! However, I’m spending lockdown with my boyfriend in Essex. As a family we have the most gorgeous and well behaved black Labrador called Molly and back in September Molly gave birth to 5 little puppies which helped a lot during all the lockdowns!

Why did you join K9 Nation?

I joined K9 Nation because it’s all about dogs! Being part of a family whose always had a dog, including 2 litters, means I understand the impact having a four legged friend can have and therefore helping create a community whereby we can support that was very appealing to me. K9 Nation is a very positive and supportive community which is exactly the kind of place I want to work! It also means that during my studies I can put my knowledge to real-life work and learn lots too!

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

What I enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation is the opportunity and flexibility to try out different aspects of the business as well as work in the area I most enjoy giving me the chance to experience new things and give me a full understanding of all areas of K9 Nation. I also enjoy that there’s multiple interns so we can all work together and support each other.

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

From this internship, I firstly want to achieve a better knowledge and understanding on how start-up businesses work as well as receive first-hand experience of skills that are transferable to other jobs and other aspects in life so I can be prepared for future challenges.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time, I love watching a good crime drama series or reading a good book! During lockdown, I have also started learning Spanish on Duolingo and skipping!

Deepa Patel

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Deepa. I live in London and I’m a recent Law graduate. I was one of the unfortunate students who graduated in 2020 and had to have a virtual graduation!

Why did you join K9 Nation?

I joined K9 Nation as the internship seemed like a great opportunity to learn about starting, growing and scaling a start-up, and I believe that start-ups are some of the best places to gain experience as you can often impact the most change there compared to larger companies. Moreover, I was also very interested in gaining general employability advice through The Grad Soc’s sessions.

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

The thing that I enjoy most about working with K9 Nation is that the company is entirely focused around something I absolutely love – DOGS! Although I, unfortunately, don’t have my own dog (yet), I can’t get enough of them and I can’t wait for the day that I can get my own! This is the first time that I’ve worked for a company where I’m wholeheartedly passionate about what they stand for, and this really makes a difference to how you approach your work.

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

Through the internship, I hope to learn how to start and grow my own business if I decide to do so in the future, gain employability advice that I can use when applying for jobs, and be challenged to do things outside out my comfort zone, such as pitching ideas. I also hope to meet and build a rapport with a wide variety of people and expand my network.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time, I enjoy listening to music, hanging out with friends (not that we can do that right now), trying out new things, reading and writing!

Evy Miller

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name’s Evy Miller, I live in Liverpool and I’m currently studying Business with Marketing at LJMU in my first year!

Why did you join K9 Nation?

Because I love dogs! I have a massive passion for them – always have, and I have 2 of my own labradors.

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

It’s got to be seeing everyone’s dogs on Zoom. They’ve all got their own funny little personalities so it’s always a good time seeing the dogs join in.

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

Hopefully to get some more industry experience that I can take through with me to the second and third year as well as any placements I do during my uni career!

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

Probably watching netflix and eating sushi, weekends are the best time for a relax!

Sarah Williams

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a Marketing grad from The University of York. I am currently living in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Why did you join K9 Nation?

I joined K9 Nation because it sounded like a great opportunity to utilise the skills within my degree. In addition, I love dogs and I was really excited by the concept and the idea of a community for dog lovers. I love being a part of helping it grow into a bigger community that every dog owner can be part of.

What do you enjoy the most about working with K9 Nation?

I enjoy speaking to friends/family/colleagues about the app and encouraging people to download it. I also enjoy trying new walks to add to the app, as circumstances have changed with Covid, this has become something I am starting to enjoy more and finding new places is always exciting. I am also enjoying having some responsibility with my side project!

What do you want to achieve with this internship?

I want to achieve a better understanding of how theory works in practice within a business. I am enjoying my side project, which is giving me the chance to use my skills and push myself to learn more. So ultimately, I want to get as much experience and exposure to real business situations as possible, as this is my first time working in Marketing. Hopefully this will help me build a career I love and give me an insight into which areas I like better than others.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my spare time, I enjoy walking my dog in different areas and exploring new places. I also have a small business where I create digital art and I enjoy creating these for people. I love design and so I also love interior design, I change my room around all the time and adding bits to make my space unique is something I love to do. In more normal life, pre-covid, I also enjoy socialising with my friends and trying new restaurants and cooking!
