Founder Becky talks about why she went down the investment route with her business.
Back at the start of 2020 I was the sole founder of K9 Nation and while I had a huge belief in the business and a vision of what it could become, I knew I had hit a wall in how far I could take it on my own both in terms of having the skills to push it to the next stage and also the financial backing. My savings were only getting me so far!
My vision for what K9 Nation could become was big! The sky was the limit and in order to make that dream a reality, and create the ultimate app for dog owners everywhere, I knew I had to stop being short-sighted and dare to fulfil the ambition. There is a saying I always hear, “go big or go home” and I knew for a fact I wasn’t ready to go home!
The way I viewed things, I could have either carried on owning 100% of what would have inevitably ended up being nothing, or I could get some investment into the business. I’d give up some equity, but I’d still own a part of something special. So off I went to find some investors.
Getting Initial Investment
Getting investment isn’t easy, particularly the first time and as a novice to the world of being an entrepreneur but nevertheless I was successful in getting my very first round of seed investment into the business. This investment, whilst extremely valuable, came with a small pot of money but a huge amount of sweat equity. This was amazing for me as I was no longer on my own and was surrounded by an amazing leadership team to support me, a marketing team and some amazing software developers who could re-build the app for me.
“I could own 100% of nothing or a part of something special”
Since our first funding round completed back in June 2020, the K9 Nation pack have been busy getting the basic functionality of the app ready, building the K9 Nation Marketplace and building our community with our amazing ambassadors, our interns and founding members.
We are just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of what lies ahead for K9 Nation and I am so excited for what’s to come. I know it will be a lot of hard work but I feel so incredibly lucky that I get to do something I love every day.
In order for us to continue to grow and carry out our plans, we are now embarking on our second fund raise which is taking part on Crowdcube. This is so exciting and marks a key point in the K9 Nation journey as this is where our community and dog lovers just like me can get involved and own a piece of the business with as little as £10.
