Our founder Becky Baker talks about why K9 Nation launched the Laws for Paws campaign

We launched the Laws for Paws campaign back in March on Dog Theft Awareness day with one primary objective – to raise awareness of the need for pet theft reform!!

Dog theft has been an increasingly worrying problem as statistics continue to rise as a result of the market demand for dogs throughout the pandemic.

We all know that the act of stealing a dog is horrendous and something we wouldn’t ever want another dog owner to go through but the issue we want to raise awareness about is the inadequacy of the current UK legal system to punish those who commit the crime!

Under the current law, the theft of a pet is covered under the Theft Act legislation and is classed the same as though someone had stolen an inanimate object such as a laptop or a TV. Campaigners are calling for Government to create a specific offence relating to pet theft so that the courts would be able to give appropriate custodial sentences to act as a deterrent, provide punishment, and protect the public.

There is already some great work being done by the Pet Theft Reform Campaign to tackle this issue and that campaign is supported by the likes of SAMPA (Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance), Dog Lost and a whole alliance of those pledging their support to the cause.

Here at K9 Nation, we felt frustrated that we couldn’t do more to help. We had all signed the current Government petition as individuals but we wanted to do more. We spoke to some of our other fellow dog business owners who were feeling similarly helpless so we decided we wanted to help harness and channel that desire to do something proactive by supporting businesses to educate their customers.

We launched the campaign and collaborated with Scruffy Little Terrier to create some campaign t-shirts and more recently with Handmade by Hayley B to produce some campaign bandanas for our dogs with all profits being donated to DogLost.

In addition, we helped push the link to the current Government petition to encourage people to sign and show their support as well as creating some free downloadable social media graphics that our supporting businesses could share to raise awareness. We also provided a template press release for businesses to share with their local press and tell them all about their support of the campaign!

On the 15th May 2021, we are planning a social media takeover where we are encouraging all our supporting businesses and their customers to share their Laws for Paws posts and use the hashtag #lawsforpaws.

The deadline for the current petition is on 20 May and we want to help get as many signatures on there as possible and add pressure on the Government to act.

To find out more information on how you can get involved and purchase either a t-shirt or bandana please visit k9nation.dog/lawsforpaws/

Don't forget to get involved on the 15th May!

- Download your free graphic via the website and post on social media using the hashtag #lawsforpaws

- Add the Facebook profile frame by searching for ‘LawsForPaws’

- Purchase your campaign t-shirt or dog bandana to raise money for DogLost

A big thank you to all our supporting businesses for joining the Laws for Paws Campaign!

Dog thefts are estimated to have increased by 250% during the pandemic due to the sharp rise in demand.

According to the Kennel Club less than 5% of pet theft cases result in a conviction and approximately only  22% of stolen dogs are reunited with their owner

Currently, if a dog is stolen this is classified as a crime under the Theft Act 1968 and a dog is considered to be a possession or as the law refers to them ‘goods’.

Within the Theft Act, there are 4 classifications of theft ranging from the lowest (up to £500 worth of stolen goods and little or no significant additional harm to the victim or others) up to category 1 (goods stolen with a value of £100,000 or above or high value with significant additional harm to the victim or others).

The maximum sentencing penalty for anyone found guilty of stealing a dog is seven year’s imprisonment however because the majority of dogs are seen as having low financial value criminals often receive much lower sentences.

There are several groups and individuals who have started online petitions to tackle this issue.

In June 2020 the Petitions Committee wrote an open letter suggesting, “Ministers could bring forward legislation, either by amending the Theft Act or the Animal Welfare Act, that would create a specific new offence of pet theft with an appropriate sentencing range that will act as a deterrent and provide a punishment that reflects the impact of stealing a living creature and companion.”

The topic was last debated in Parliament on the 19th October 2020 and the last formal response from them on  20 January 2021 was “Current court sentencing guidelines for theft already take into account the emotional distress that theft of a family pet can have on owners, and already recommend higher penalties for such offences.”

With comments from the Home Secretary Priti Patel on 12th February this year suggesting she was "building up" the case for making pet theft into a serious offence we want to amplify the amazing work already done by so many and force this to the top of the agenda in Parliament.
