Uniting dog owners and dog businesses all over the UK to achieve Pet Theft Reform
Dogs businesses up and down the country are desperate to act and do all they can in the fight against the rising trend in dog thefts. #LawsForPaws wants to spread awareness of ongoing dog theft campaigns to get stricter sentencing for criminals that steal dogs bringing justice for dogs and Laws For Paws.

Laws For Paws
- We aim to unite dog businesses all over the UK in the fight to achieve Pet Theft Reform
- We want to provide businesses with the tools and information they need to educate their customers on how they can support the excellent work being done by The Pet Theft Reform Campaign
- We are hoping to raise money to support Dog Lost through the sale of the unique #LawsforPaws campaign t-shirt (100% of the profits will be donated)
In a bid not to dilute the great work already being done by the Pet Theft Reform Campaign, we want to help harness and channel that energy by supporting businesses to educate their customers. We want to make them aware of the great work that is being done so that they too can join in the fight. We want changes to the laws around dog theft in the UK and with your help, we can succeed!

According to the Kennel Club less than 5% of pet theft cases result in a conviction and approximately only 22% of stolen dogs are reunited with their owner

Currently, if a dog is stolen this is classified as a crime under the Theft Act 1968 and a dog is considered to be a possession or as the law refers to them ‘goods’.
Within the Theft Act, there are 4 classifications of theft ranging from the lowest (up to £500 worth of stolen goods and little or no significant additional harm to the victim or others) up to category 1 (goods stolen with a value of £100,000 or above or high value with significant additional harm to the victim or others).
The maximum sentencing penalty for anyone found guilty of stealing a dog is seven year’s imprisonment however because the majority of dogs are seen as having low financial value criminals often receive much lower sentences.
There are several groups and individuals who have started online petitions to tackle this issue.
In June 2020 the Petitions Committee wrote an open letter suggesting, “Ministers could bring forward legislation, either by amending the Theft Act or the Animal Welfare Act, that would create a specific new offence of pet theft with an appropriate sentencing range that will act as a deterrent and provide a punishment that reflects the impact of stealing a living creature and companion.”
The topic was last debated in Parliament on the 19th October 2020 and the last formal response from them on 20 January 2021 was “Current court sentencing guidelines for theft already take into account the emotional distress that theft of a family pet can have on owners, and already recommend higher penalties for such offences.”
With comments from the Home Secretary Priti Patel on 12th February this year suggesting she was "building up" the case for making pet theft into a serious offence we want to amplify the amazing work already done by so many and force this to the top of the agenda in Parliament.
