Jordan Dargue, our Strategic Advisor, tells us about some Spooktacular Halloween walks!

As the cold days and dark nights start to draw in, walking your dog can become less enjoyable and you often find yourself walking your beloved friends in the dark which can be unnerving for some people.

My days start early, and the pack and I are often up at 5:30 am walking, and can be completing our last walk around 7 pm …again in the dark. During the week we stick to our local walks, some lead walks and some off-lead walks across the local fields and recreational areas – which can become repetitive and not always the most enjoyable in the dark.

That’s why, when it comes to a weekend, I love nothing more than jumping in the dog van and travelling to some of our local beauty spots to set off on adventure walks.

For walking your dogs, County Durham and North Yorkshire have so much to offer, from coastal and woodland to countryside and hill walks.  Whatsmore if you’re like me and have a ‘pack’ of dogs you quite often like to walk in less busy areas where the dogs can be off the lead exploring without any danger.

As we approach Halloween, I wanted to share with the community some of my favourite ‘spooktacular’ Halloween walks from around County Durham and North Yorkshire, along with some extra walks, you can enjoy with your dogs this Halloween.

Halloween Walks

Crimson Dene – Coastal & Dene Walk (Crimdon, County Durham) – TS27 4DW

This walkway is an old railway line which stretches from Thorpe Thewles to Castle Eden and is good for walking your dogs off the lead. The adjacent Thorp Wood provides an interesting diversion and opportunities for circular walks with magnificent views over Tees Valley towards Roseberry Topping – a local landmark. In the snow this pathway is magical.

Choppwell Woods – Rowlands Gill, NE39 1LT

This walk is a beautiful, huge expanse of woodland on the fringes of Gateshead, and cusp of the Derwent Valley.  At Christmas time it is full of a festive atmosphere and crafts, boasting a wide range of pine, spruce and fir Christmas trees you can take home.

But there is so much more to enjoy: 360 hectares to be precise, with mixed woodland and miles of walks to enjoy with your dogs, on and off the lead. There are three trails as well as areas for cycles and horses plus orienteering and picnic areas to enjoy.

There’s an easy-access trail too. Forestry England calls it “a wood for everyone” and “a real gem”.

This place is very dog friendly, but I would recommend you take your own dog bowls and water to enjoy along the way.

Choppwell Woods – Rowlands Gill, NE39 1LT

Quite often my pack and I enjoy a leisurely stroll along the river banks ‘on the lead of course’.  If you’re looking for an area for quiet outdoor contemplation in the middle of a city then here you have it.

With Durham Cathedral and Castle as a backdrop, a riverside stroll also makes for great photo opportunities – especially from the 1776 Prebends’ Bridge.  The pack and I quite often venture along these riverbanks and then step into the City Centre for a glass of wine and some tapas alfresco where the dogs enjoy watching the passers-by, as well as the attention. Most of the restaurants and cafes in Durham don’t allow dogs inside, but are very dog friendly, offering fresh bowls of water, and some even have a supply of dog biscuits.

There is ample parking in Durham but recommend this walk on a Sunday when the City Centre is quiet.

Halloween Walks

Castle Eden Walk Way -Forestry Walk (Wynyard Woods and Thorpe Thewels) TS21 3JG

This walkway is an old railway line which stretches from Thorpe Thewles to Castle Eden and is good for walking your dogs off the lead. The adjacent Thorp Wood provides an interesting diversion and opportunities for circular walks with magnificent views over Tees Valley towards Roseberry Topping – a local landmark. In the snow this pathway is magical.

There are some steep steps leading into Thorp Wood and a pond at the bottom, but it’s great for exploring if you also have children who you like to take on your walks.

At the end of the route, or at the beginning of the Thorpe Thewles route, there is a beautiful cafe which serves hot drinks, savoury light bites and cake. Dogs are not allowed in the cafe but there is plenty of seating outside – plus water and feeding bowls for your dogs.

In addition to walking my dogs in the local County Durham area, we often head down the A1 to North Yorkshire where there are some beautiful places to walk your dogs, one of our favourites is Kiplin Hall and Gardens, located in Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Kiplin Hall & Gardens is located in Richmond, North Yorkshire

Kiplin Hall and Gardens are now open 6 days a week with no need to pre-book. Dogs must be on leads at all times within the grounds but there is plenty to explore around the lake and the surrounding woodlands.

The Hall & Gardens are very dog friendly and have water bowls located at the front and back doors but understandably only service dogs are allowed within the Hall itself.

In addition, This Halloween they are hosting the ‘Crowe’s Wood Halloween Trail’ from the 24th October to the 1st November where guests can follow a spooky trail full of spooky characters lurking in the undergrowth and we double-checked our 4 legged friends are welcome to join in the fun.

Visitors are encouraged to take part in the fun and dress up too and for more information, you can visit their website at https://kiplinhall.co.uk/events/crowes-wood-halloween-trail/

There are many more ‘spooktacular’ walks and places to visit with your dogs in the County Durham and North Yorkshire area.

If any of the K9 Nation Community, would like to visit and explore these areas further with me and my pack – head over to the K9 Nation app and drop me a private message…X
