Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities.
With four Centres across three counties; North Lincolnshire, South Lincolnshire, East Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire they continue to provide a safe place for homeless dogs and to seek new loving places for them to live. They pioneer and provide the highest standards of welfare for the dogs in their care and actively seek opportunities to educate the public in matters pertaining to dog welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among dogs.
Dog Welfare Assistants (DWA’s) are skilled members of the Jerry Green Dog Rescue team who provide the highest level of care, love and support to dogs in need of a second chance. Their vital work changes the lives of the dogs in their rescue Centres and starts them on a journey towards a brighter future.
Shelley Wilks (Deputy CEO and Head of Welfare) shares what a typical day is like for her team of DWA’s at Jerry Green Dog Rescue and what it means to give dogs a second chance in life.
“The first thing we do in the morning is go to the kennels to give the dogs their breakfast, any morning medication, and give them a good fuss! We give their kennels a clean and refresh any bedding; making sure our dogs environment is comfortable, clean and cosy is so important to us!
Once we have finished in the kennels we take the dogs out for some exercise or for training!”
“Some of our dogs might have a specific training programme that we need to work on, developed by a qualified Centre Trainer, or we will take them for a walk in one of our secure fields or for a good sniffy walk off-site!”
“Once all of our dogs have been walked and are settled back in their kennels, we will complete our daily logs and any paperwork tasks, to ensure we are keeping track of each dog’s individual progress and journey.
We also make calls to our supporters; to make arrangements for families to embark on our Meet&Match® journey, to follow up with an adopter and offer any additional support and advice, or to answer enquiries regarding dogs needing our help. We also arrange and attend any necessary vets’ appointments during this time, all of our dogs get a full health check by a vet before they are adopted.

It is hard work caring for all the dogs in our Centres, but it is so rewarding! Being part of their journey, from intake through to adoption is so special for us, particularly when those that have been here a long time find their perfect home, and we wouldn’t change it for the world!
There are many reasons why a dog may find themselves in our care, and often the situation that surrounds the need for our help can be deeply upsetting. “All proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly into providing care and enrichment for our rescue dogs.
In the afternoon we will usually have Meet&Match® visits (excited potential adopters coming to meet their future forever friend!), or home visits booked in.
Once all of our afternoon activities and visits are complete, we give our dogs their dinner, any further medication required, and make sure their water bowls are full before bed time. We’ll then make sure the kennels are peaceful and secure, before compiling a hand over for the morning; giving an update of how the dogs have been that day, and details of any tasks that need to be actioned by the next person on duty.
“After lunch, we clean the kennels and spend more time with the dogs. We always try to give them as much variety in their day as possible and keep them entertained with enrichment activities like stuffed Kongs, and games. We are very passionate about educating the public in the benefits of enrichment for dogs and have recently produced an Enrichment Cookbook, containing over 20 recipes to keep your dog’s enrichment toys interesting, which is available to buy for just £5 via our website”
